Dana Mauer gives back to the community.

Posted on December 03, 2017

As the adage goes, if you want something done, ask a busy person to do it. Dana Mauer is just the person if you want something ski-, dance-, theater-, education-, or, really, kid-related.

“I believe in community, in doing the little things that makes the community better. I love being with people or if anyone needs help, I am one the the first to sign up. I get a lot of joy out of it,” Mauer says in between running kids to a play and after juggling ski schedules for her job with Buddy Werner League.

This is why Dana is December's Difference Maker. Dana doesn’t sigh deeply and feel aggrieved when she volunteers - she loves helping out in any way she can. She comes by her helpful spirit, she says, by way of her mother, who was always giving back. She, in turn, is showing the spirit of volunteerism to her three children, who are a freshman, sophomore and senior at Battle Mountain High School.

Her tenure as a volunteer started when her older entered the kindergarten fray. Dana so loved the school she was constantly submitting items to Town Talk. The Vail Daily asked her to submit less frequently.

“I went to my first PTA meeting and felt a connection there. Right away I got super involved,” she shares. Come spring of that first year, she stepped up as president of the PTA. “And I have never looked back.”

She’s been on the PTA at Edwards Elementary, Berry Creek and now Battle Mountain.
I have known Dana for almost 20 years and I have never met someone more willing to pitch in and help when asked. She exemplifies an involved parent and goes above and beyond time and time again,” shares ERYC’s Community Education Manager Carol Johnson. “She has served as President of all her kids PTAs and does it with a smile on her face. Reaching out to others comes naturally to her and she does it all to celebrate and elevate our youth. I am honored to know her and to have worked beside her.”

Dana is one of those rare souls who actually loves fundraising. She believes in education, she loves the schools here and wants to help make a difference. She was an integral member of Wild West Days, the huge fundraiser that goes to every school in the school district.

“It’s something I believed in and it was easy because everyone wanted to donate to the schools. We are so lucky to have such allies in the community here,” she says with enthusiasm.

For the past five years she’s been involved with E(f)ec, the education foundation for Eagle County, helping with the annual Evening of Stars, a banquet to celebrate teachers, as well as the Apple Award - a $500 award that goes to one outstanding teacher each month.

For many years she was a parent volunteer with Buddy Werner League, now she’s a paid employee but does it because she loves it: the athleticism, the competition, the friendship and the confidence it instills in the participants.

Dana has also helped backstage at performances and dances, been an AVID tutor both at Berry Creek and now at Battle Mountain and serves at her church. It’s pretty much non-stop go for Dana, and because of her spirit and attitude, she helps make the community a better place.

Thank you, Dana!
