Taking care of the whole community, the whole body, and one person at a time.

Mountain Family Health Centers is fighting the high cost of health care in Eagle County - but the organization knows to be successful it can't do it alone. The nonprofit organization has clinics in Eagle County offering dental, medical and behavioral health. It's sort of a one-stop shop for the entire body - and the entire community. Services are offered on a sliding scale.

The organization's mission is to provide high quality, integrated primary medical, behavioral and dental health care with special consideration for the medically underserved, regardless of the ability to pay. This simply means everyone can get to see a doctor or dentist - as it should be.

"We take private insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP and uninsured. We are not a free clinic, it's a sliding fee scale," explains Garry Schalla Development Director. He explains this has folks be invested in their health. "People are investing financially and mentally in their own health. It becomes a priority."

By serving the underserved population - those who work in construction, hospitality, tourism - MFHC is helping keep Eagle County as a whole healthy, both physically and economically. After all, many of these workers are the under sung heroes who work behind the scenes.

"We work on wellness of the total individual. Our whole model is based on value, not volume. We have longer consultations," Garry says. Upon arriving to the facility, the patient is asked questions and interacts with the specialists - does the patient need dental work? Or maybe they seem depressed and need information on mental health or substance abuse options - it's all offered by MFHC. "We are there to help that person," Garry adds.

One of the most sought-after clinics is right in Avon Elementary School. It opened a year ago and follows its model of integrate care - primary, behavior and dental care. Its offered for the whole family and is open year round. In the past year here, MFHC saw 700 new patients - that is many people who may not have had any healthcare in the past.

In the next couple of years MFHC will be able to serve even more patients with a new building in Edwards that incorporates many facets and agencies in Eagle County. The freestanding clinic will house Mountain Family Health, including behavioral, dental and medical, a community conference area, Eagle County public health, family resource centers and others, as well. In the next few weeks the partnering agencies will also see how to elevate mental health services to meet all the needs here in the county.

MFHC is located throughout Eagle County and the Roaring Fork Valley. To learn more, or see where its locations are, visit www.mountainfamily.org.
